What is Design Thinking?

This text is extracted from minute 1:30

Design Thinking is a framework to innovate. It is the base to solving problems and challenges. It is especially helpful to create innovative products and service experiences.

Design Thinking is not only for large organizations. It can help startups and smaller companies. It is not just about designers either. We usually think of design with something that has to do with art, and pixels. But, Design Thinking is about functionality.

Most people in organizations don’t think of themselves as innovators. However, innovation is for everyone and it is everyone’s job. Design Thinking goes beyond the five steps process, it is about embracing a culture of innovation.

When we talk about Design Thinking, we talk about innovation too. For an organization to be able to innovate they need to look at these three elements,

  1. Business – Is it viable for your business goals?
  2. Technology – Is it feasible?
  3. People – Do people want or need it?

It is at the intersection of these three elements where innovation happens and we can build better products.

5 Steps Guide to Innovate with Design Thinking

This text is extracted from minute 6:38

1. – Empathize – Understand your users

Who are my users ?

  • Do I know what matters to my users?
  • What are my assumptions?

To empathize you need to,

  • Observe you users and their behaviors
  • Engage with them, do interviews and try to have a conversation
  • Always ask why
  • Describe their motivations

2.- Define – What is your problem?

Do I understand my scope limits

  • Have I established my users’ needs?
  • Prioritize my users’ expectations

To define you need to,

  • Filter your gathered feedback
  • Interpret your findings
  • Look out for patterns and define the problem your users have

3.- Idiate – Explore new ideas, the more the better

  • How do we solve the problem?
  • Do I have enough ideas?

To Ideate you need to,

  • Brainstorm with multidisciplinary teams
  • Go for crazy ideas
  • Allow your team total freedom
  • Vote for the best idea

4.- Prototype – Fast turnaround prototype

  • Am I spending too many hours prototyping?
  • Does this prototype cover my MVP?

To prototype you need to,

  • Sketch prototypes of ideas that solve needs (use paper and pencil)
  • Identify the questions you want to answer with your prototype
  • Use methods like Rapid Paper Prototyping to help you build faster

5.- Test – Validate your ideas with users

  • Are people willing to use my product?
  • Do people feel my product helps them solve a problem?
  • Is my product intuitive?

To test you need to,

  • Show, don’t tell
  • Use methodologies like Usability Testing and Interviews to validate your prototype
  • Take notes on how users use and misuse your prototype
  • Iterate your design

Companies that Successfully Use Design Thinking

This text is extracted from minute 20:10

Ikea – Through a research they fund people only use 20% of the clothes in their closet because they are not able to find the right one when needed.

GoPro – They spend 1 or 2 hours a day to get out of the building and use their cameras. This helps them understand their products and empathize with users.
